The Circulation Department is located at the entrance of the library.
Circulation staff members are happy to assist patrons check-in/check-out items as well as put library materials on hold from both our library and other libraries throughout Nassau County.
Apply / Renew
How Do I Apply For / Renew A Library Card?
A current photo ID (NYS driver's license) and a piece of mail addressed to a current School District #5 address is required
Utility bill, pay stub, property tax statement, bank statement, etc.
Library cards must be obtained / renewed in person by the cardholder.
Exceptions will be made for homebound patrons; please speak with circulation staff for details.

- Library Card keytags can be obtained with a $1.00 donation to the library.
- Replacement cards can be obatined for $2.00
- Your Hillside Public Library card can be used at other Nassau County Libraries.
- Patrons are required to use their library card barcode to register for all Library programs.
- Library cards expire after 3 years. Please bring a current photo ID (NYS driver’s license) and a current piece of mail (utility bill or bank statement) addressed to School District #5 address to Circulation to renew your card.
- State Mandated Access Cards are available for non-School District #5 residents. A State Mandated Access Card allows an individual who lives in an area in Nassau County which does not currently support local public library service to borrow materials from the member libraries of the Nassau Library System. These cards are an interim accommodation while mechanisms can be put into place so that all Nassau County residents are able to contribute their fair share of tax support for public libraries. State Mandated Cards can only be obtained at Levittown and East Meadow libraries.
- Contract Patron: Residents that do not currently have a library account with the Hillside Public Library can purchase an annual membership to become a Contract Patron. Contract Patrons receive all the benefits of School District 5 residents including patron program registration and online database access. One year memberships cost $390 (check only; made out to “Hillside Public Library”). Please see Circulation Desk for more information.
Circulation Loan Periods & Fines
Patrons may take a total of 12 DVDs and 12 CDs
- 3 Day Loan: Museum Passes
- 7 Day Loan: DVDs
- 14 Day Loan: Juvenile Non-Fiction, New Adult Fiction / Non-Fiction Books, Young Adult Books, Books on CD, Music CDs, Playaways, Magazines, ROKU Devices, Mobile Hotspots
- 28 Day Loan: Adult and Juvenile Fiction Books
- $0.10 per day overdue: “Local Patron” Books, Adult & Young Adult Books, Music CDs, Magazines, Juvenile & Young Adult Audio Books
- $0.05 per day overdue: Juvenile Book and Juvenile CD Book Kit
- $1.00 per day overdue: DVDs, Adult Audiobooks, Playaways
- $10.00 per day overdue: Museum Passes, ROKUs, Mobile Hotspots
Lost and Damaged Items
In the event that library materials are lost or damaged, please contact the Circulation Department immediately. Replacement items will not be accepted, and payment must be made. We accept cash or check.
